How come the price of generic drugs increased?

My doctor prescribed a 10-day course of doxycycline. I always ask for a generic since I need to pay full price. I was shocked when the pharmacist said it would be almost $65.00. I took it 3 years ago. I think it cost me less than $8.00. How could that be?
