How long for my diabetes medicine to start working?

I have type 2 diabetes that I controlled for almost a year with metformin. My blood sugars are higher and my hemoglobin A1c has increased despite losing weight. My doctor prescribed pioglitazone. How long it will take for the new medicine to work?
